The No. 1 desire? A tablet -- and that means the iPad for most people. So why not getting an iPad for Christmas this year? Here I've picked some of the most frequently asked questions on Yahoo! Answers about Apple iPad.


1.Should I get an iPad for Christmas or wait for iPad 2.0?
Since there has been no announcement so far, we think the answer would be no. It's too close to Christmas for an announcement yet to come. Apple releases new products during MacWorld or Apple Developer's Conference, both are around middle of the year. In all likelihood, the earliest that a new model will be released is April 2011. That means if you are willing to wait 5 months, the iPad 2.0 would be a better choice.
If you want to give someone an iPad as a gift this holiday season, you may want to consider buying it now as opposed to later.
Analysts are already moving their projections up for how many iPads Apple will sell this year, and writers are already saying that it will be this year’s “Tickle Me Elmo” (is any toy ever going to replace that thing as an example?), but is this on its way to being a self-fulfilling prophecy?  It appears there is a large dose of reality attached to it.
Currently all iPad models are showing a shipping schedule of 7 to 10 days, and as we get closer to the holiday shopping season it is sure to get worse.  While normal gift buying would cause those dates to slip some more, it seems that no one was quite ready for the demand Apple has seen on these devices.

iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak and Unlock Update !

Dev Team has released new information regarding iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak and unlock situation, which is as follows:

With Turkey Day a few days off, today Apple publicly released FW version 4.2.1.  As always, ultrasn0w unlockers please stay far far away from this official firmware (and all official firmware).  Wait for the ability to create custom 4.2.1. IPSWs that don’t update your baseband!  If you’re not an unlocker, read on!

The best news of all is for owners of iPhone3G, older iPhone3GS, and non-MC iPod touch 2G.  Due to a combination of our original pwnage2 exploit, the arm7_go exploit, 24kpwn, and limera1n, your device is “just as jailbreakable as ever.”  You reap the full benefit of an untethered 4.2.1 jailbreak.

Next are the owners of all the more recent devices.  The good news there is that due to geohot’s limera1n exploit, all recent devices can be jailbroken (this will be true until Apple released new hardware that fixes geohot’s limerain exploit in the bootrom).  The bad news is that right now, the 4.2.1 jailbreak is *tethered* on all of these recent devices.  A tethered jailbreak means that each time your device loses battery power or needs to be rebooted, you must attach it to a PC or Mac to boot into the jailbroken state.  @comex is working hard on a method that may untether the 4.2.1 jailbreak, but it will require you to have your 4.1 SHSH blobs in order to use it.  No word on how much more effort it will take though (please don’t bug @comex about it!).  (We also have an alternative method that may work, but @comex’s method is much more elegant.)

So when does all this 4.2.1 jailbreak action happen?  Well if you’re a JB developer or tinkerer, you’ve already probably used the redsn0w mentioned in our last post to jailbreak 4.2.1 and at least get SSH working.  But beyond that, there are still some last minute issues with MobileSubstrate and comex’s kernel patches that are being fixed.  We’ll tweet and post a blog update when it’s all available (we hate to give ETAs, but barring any unforeseen problems, probably later today).

In the meantime, please make sure you have your 4.1 SHSH blobs for all your devices.  These will be important even for firmware beyond 4.1 (using both comex’s method and our alternative, depending on how each of them turn out.)

ultrasn0w unlock:  After redsn0w is officially released with the new Cydia and kernel patches, we’ll be able to assess the unlock situation.  It’s already looking very promising though, so expect the unlock for the 3G and 3GS to be coming this week.  The i4 unlock is taking more effort though, and no further concrete info is available about that yet.

iPhone 4.2: What Will iOS 4.2 Bring to the iPhone?

We've already spent some time talking about what iOS 4.2 will do for the iPad (iPad 4.2). That's mostly because iOS 4.2 is mainly geared towards the iPad, adding many of the features that seemed to be missing after having some hands on with iOS4.


We are expecting 4.2 to land by tomorrow, but Apple hasn't made the date official yet. As of yet, we haven't taken as much time to look at what new features iOS 4.2 will bring to the iPhone. It's not a huge upgrade for those who already have the operating system on their phone, but it's worth checking out what Apple plans to add with this update.

Let's do that right now:

AirPlay

AirPlay is one of the biggest features coming to iOS with the 4.2 update. It's the next step in the evolution of Apple's AirTunes. Users can stream content such as video and audio between their devices. Streaming can happen between the iPhone and Apple TV or even with third-party speakers equipped with the technology. We are also interested in what Apple may be able to do with this tech in the future.

Control Ringer Volume

This feature may not seem like much at first, but it's actually quite useful. For one, this may be great for individual ringers that are louder. What's even more important, however, is that you may now adjust the volume levels of the ringer independently of the volume level of your iPhone's audio player or games.

Find in Safari
We are glad that Apple is finally bringing this feature to Mobile Safari. You can now search for a term within a page. This is especially useful for pages of text where you need to find a small piece of information. You simply type into the Google search bar on the top and you have an option for finding the term "On This Page." The word or term you are looking for will be highlighted in the browser.

FaceTime Through SMS

There is now a button that allows you to launch a FaceTime conversation through an SMS chat. This is another strong indication of Apple's push to get FaceTime to span all their devices. (Coming soon to iPad 2?)

New SMS Alert Sounds
Users will now be able to set different SMS alert sounds for each contact. The downside? They aren't going to be custom sounds. Sorry.

AirPrint

Just in case you're ever reading in bed with your iPhone and decide you want to print something out, or for those times when you are trying to multitask at work by printing out that important spreadsheet while on the can. (Believe us, Microsoft says it happens)

Midi Out
Like the iPad, the iPhone now supports midi out. A user can create midi data, such as a drum loop or musical sequence and connect their iPhone to a midi device with a USB port to make it playback the sequence they've composed. 

Improved Performance on iPhone 3G

 

iOS 4.2 may see some improvements on the iPhone 3G. iOS4 was very difficult to run on the handset and rendered it almost unusable for some owners. Apple launched 4.1 later, which featured some improvements but many users were still unhappy with the performance. This one looks to run much better.

Is Your iPhone Ready for iOS 4.2?
The added features will be a welcome addition to the operating system. If the reports of better performance on the 3G are correct, then the owners of that model are sure to be much more satisfied.
Many of the additions are minor, but will come in handy to heavy iPhone users.
